Are you running in the London Marathon?

You probably have spent months training in the run up to the London Marathon and with it soon approaching it might be a good idea to start thinking about how to recover your body post marathon. Having a post marathon massage will certainly be beneficial and help aid in recovery, here’s why:

Reduces Soreness

With any type of rigorous exercise, it is inevitable that you will get DOMS  (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) afterwards. This will will most definitely be the case with completing a marathon. Having a massage will help to ease that soreness.

Reduces Swelling

Massage will help to alleviate swelling and increase the disposal of metabolic waste.

Promotes Healing

Massage has been shown to increase mitochondria within the body’s cells, and in turn helps the muscle to repair itself after intense exercise.

Relaxes Muscles

Massage will help to relax any tension within the muscles and soften the muscles, ligaments and tendons. Massage also reduces adhesions within the fascia (a lining between and within muscles) which can limit flexibility.

We would like to wish all London Marathon runners the best of luck on 22nd April!

We look forward to seeing you all for your post marathon massage.

Top 5 Essential Oils to Uplift the Mind & Body!

Spring is finally here! As we wave goodbye to what feels like the longest and coldest winter yet, it’s time to say hello to lighter mornings, longer days and brighter weather (we hope). It’s the time of year for new beginnings and making positive changes which will set a precedent for the rest of the year. The weather has a massive impact on our everyday mood, therefore it’s important that we spend as much time in natural daylight as we possibly can. However, aromatherapy can also help give us that extra boost as we shift from season to season. Five essential oils that I would recommend using to help uplift your mood are:

Lemon

Lemon oil is one of my favourites as it has so many therapeutic properties. It has a detoxifying effect on the mind, helps boost the body’s immune system, and can even help soothe headaches and migraines.

Clary Sage

Clary Sage oil is an anti depressant and a sedative therefore is calming to the nervous system, particularly in cases of depression, stress, insomnia and deep seated tension.

Orange

Orange oil is good for overall wellbeing and promoting relaxation. Like lemon oil, it has a detoxifying effect on the mind and body and helps boost the immune system. Another oil that can be used as an alternative to Orange is Mandarin.

Grapefruit

Like Lemon and Orange oil, Grapefruit oil contains high levels of Vitamin C making it great at boosting the immune system. It also has an uplifting effect on the mind and can help with cases of stress and depression.

Patchouli

Patchouli oil has a balancing effect on the mind and body and has proven effective in treating depression and anxiety. It can also help with lethargy and improving mood swings as well as clearing the mind.

The five essential oils which I have mentioned are just a few of the many essential oils that can help with your overall wellbeing. At Moreton Place Beauty & Wellbeing, following a consultation, I will choose the appropriate oils based on your individual needs.

You may wish to use aromatherapy as a treatment to help improve symptoms solely associated with enhancing your mood or you may want assistance with improving other conditions too. The great thing about aromatherapy is that essential oils have many therapeutic benefits which can provide relief from multiple physical and mental conditions. However, to achieve the best possible results with aromatherapy I highly recommend booking a course of four treatments.

I look forward to seeing you soon for your aromatherapy treatment.

Skincare for the Bride To Be

My Pre Wedding Tips

Fill up your Facial Diary

A full and honest consultation with a Facialist is always a helpful starting point to establish a simple and effective regime to target your main concerns. It wouldn’t be advisable to try any new products prior to your wedding to ensure you don’t have any unwanted reactions.

Skin & Stress

The added stress at this hectic time could cause inflammatory conditions including eczema or psoriasis. A visit to a reputable dermatologist is advisable if this was to happen. Stress can also affect your sleep patterns which will impact on your complexion, leaving it sensitised and dull.

Skincare Regime

Even if your skin is not showing any signs of the above and is balanced and healthy, regular facials are always going to be beneficial. A good Facialist will guide you to which facial treatments you will need to ensure your skin looks it’s very best for the big day.

A simple and regular skincare routine at home is advisable. Regular exfoliation is essential to your routine as accumulated dead skin cells leave the overall appearance of your skin looking lifeless and prevents the reflection of light which brings that lovely luminous glow. Exfoliation also assists the absorption of the lovely nutrients and beneficial ingredients.

It’s important to concentrate on your face but don’t forget to extend your skincare routine to your décolletage. Being trapped beneath clothing, spritzed with perfume and exposed to the sun, which weakens the collagen and elastin resulting in the area looking older, therefore to include this area in your facial routine is essential. The skin in this area is generally more delicate than your facial skin so it’s better to opt for a facial exfoliator rather than a body scrub as these are less abrasive. An alternative option would be to have the Carboxi Express treatment which will help to renew the skin and promote more tone.

Feed skin from within

In addition to looking after your skin on the outside it’s important to take care of it from within. Try to incorporate a healthy blend of juices into your diet in particular green juices as these contains minerals which aid the lymphatic flow and prevent puffiness. Hard as it is at this time of celebration try to keep alcohol at a minimum as this will dehydrate your skin, strip radiance and undo all of your hard work!

By following the advice above you will be able to celebrate your clear and luminous skin along with your big day!

Aromatherapy For Women’s Health

There are many essential oils that are highly effective at treating women’s health issues such as pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), menopause and hormone imbalances. In this blog post I will be sharing with you five essential oils that we use within our aromatherapy treatments which are beneficial to the overall wellbeing of women.

Geranium

Geranium essential oil has an uplifting and balancing effect on the mind and body. This oil is very beneficial for conditions such as the female menstrual cycle and menopause; its anti-depressant and calming properties help ease mood swings as well thereby improving one’s sense of wellbeing. Geranium essential oil can also help to relieve the symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Chamomile

Chamomile oil is useful in relieving symptoms of PMS and also has a calming effect on the mind and body.

Rosemary

Rosemary oil can reduce water retention during menstruation and therefore ease discomfort caused by bloating.

Clary Sage

Clary Sage essential oil is useful in treating mood swings and can help with relieving cramping during menstruation. It can also help relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, palpitations and irritability.

Ylang ylang

Ylang ylang essential oil is known for its anti-depressant, balancing and sedative properties which can help with PMS mood swings. This essential oil can also help reduce cramping.

The five essential oils which I have discussed are just some of the many essential oils that can help with your overall wellbeing. At Moreton Place Beauty & Wellbeing, following a consultation I will choose the appropriate oils based on your individual needs.

You may wish to use aromatherapy as a treatment to help improve symptoms solely associated with women’s health or you may want assistance with improving other conditions too.

The Effects of Everyday Pollution on Your Skin

There are three main types of pollution that can damage your skin causing it to age prematurely, become sensitive and appear dull.

  • UV AND HEV

Most people know about the damaging effects UVA and UVB rays can have on skin cells due to the generation of harmful free radicals.  However, there is a growing concern of HEV (artificial blue light) from electronic screens which causes more damage than the two combined.  The light can penetrate deep and reach the DNA in skin cells which can starve them of oxygen and will affect their regeneration.  This will in return cause premature ageing and leave the skin dull and grey.

  • AIR POLLUTION

Toxic particles from pollutants such as smoke, acid and gas in the air are 20 times smaller than our pores which allows them to easily penetrate deep into the lower skin layers. This will affect the skin’s natural hydration process and it’s ability to produce collagen. In addition, these toxins can also result in the skin looking dull.

  • DOMESTIC POLLUTION

Heating, air conditioning, cleaning products and other household substances sit on the skin’s surface which can cause irritation and draw out moisture resulting in dehydration.  These pollutants can also compromise the outermost skin layer (skin’s protective barrier) which makes it more easy for other pollutant types to enter and causes the skin to become more sensitive.

So with these three main types of pollution the solutions to protect and repair the skin are:

  1. The cells need regenerating and an oxygen boost.
  2. Skin needs to be detoxified and cleaned.
  3. To strengthen the skin’s barrier function.

The Excel Therapy O2 City Proof Facial targets these three types of pollution that are harmful to the skin.  The treatment has two masks which work to repair and defend the skin against pollution damage and external stress.  The Oxygenating Bubble Mask releases pure oxygen in the deep dermal layers of the skin.  The second mask activates the skin’s immune system increasing its defence capability.  The treatment also includes a highly relaxing lymphatic facial massage to de-stress and detoxify the skin. Not only will this facial leave your skin looking clearer and radiant but it will help reverse the damage caused by pollution.

This miracle facial lasts for one hour and costs £60.

If you have any questions about this treatment, any other facial treatment or skin concerns please contact me at gillian@mortenplace.co.uk

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Aromatherapy | Introduction

Introducing you to Rebecca, our Aromatherapist

“When I discovered that I was going to be learning aromatherapy as part of my college curriculum I could not wait to start researching the various essential oils and creating my own blends for my case studies. Whilst I was studying aromatherapy, I found the history and the science behind it very fascinating. I am also passionate about health and wellbeing, and I believe that alongside a healthy lifestyle, aromatherapy can really help to promote a sense of wellbeing.”

WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY?

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils to help enhance physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Essential oils are natural oils extracted from various parts of plants including flowers, leaves, stems, bark, fruit and nuts. During aromatherapy massage, not only are the oils absorbed into the skin but they also interact with the sensory and respiratory systems which has a dynamic effect on the mind and body. Each essential oil has its own unique therapeutic properties; they can work on a physical level to help improve the skin’s overall condition, increase the body’s circulation, ease muscle pain and can also treat sinus conditions. They can also be highly effective in treating psychological conditions such as stress, fatigue, depression and anxiety, as well as regulating sleep patterns and boosting the body’s immunity.

Before the treatment I will go through an in-depth consultation with you. This helps me to find out about your lifestyle and current state of mind. I will then select the appropriate oils based on your needs and concerns, so that the treatment is 100% tailor made to suit you. The treatment will begin with a breathing exercise, followed by a foot cleanse and then a full body massage.

I would highly recommend booking in for a course of four aromatherapy treatments in order to see a long term improvement in your overall wellbeing.

Each month I will be sharing with you knowledge about the therapeutic powers of essential oils so make sure you look out for next month’s post.

I look forward to seeing you soon.
